Sohum Shah’s anticipated film, Tumbbad, saw a re-release in theatres on Friday, September 13. The film surpassed its original first day business, and recorded an opening of around Rs 1.50 crore nett in India, reported the trade website sacnilk. This is more than what The Buckingham Murders, Kareena Kapoor Khan’s latest film, collected on its first day in India. The Hansal Mehta-directorial opened in the range of Rs 1.25 crore nett on Friday.
Tumbbad is expected to grow towards the weekend considering all the buzz around its re-release and the kind of visual experience it promises to the audience on the big screen. The film, which is backed by Sohum and Aanand L Rai, is expected to surpass its original lifetime collection of Rs 10 crore nett at the domestic box office.
With no new Hindi release hitting the screens, Tumbbad is expected to cross Rs 10 crore nett in the first week itself. The Buckingham Murders is a crime thriller, appealing to a niche audience, which is why it is highly unlikely for the film to compete alongside Tumbbad if the audience really decides to give it a chance again in theatres.
Meanwhile, Sohum on Saturday, September 14, announced Tumbbad 2. While he didn’t reveal a lot, he shared a teaser of the film, hinting at the sequel being even more mysterious and gripping than the first film.
The success of Tumbbad re-release is not surprising. The film was critically appreciated and also found a new life on OTT.
